Many clients come into my studio with a common goal: "Luka, I want to stop the relentless cycle of touching up my roots every few weeks. Can we do highlights or balayage to blend my greys naturally?"
Transitioning to Grey Blending—using subtle highlights, lowlights, and dimensional tones to make regrowing grey hair look natural—is one of the smartest, lowest-maintenance decisions you can make for your hair.
However, there is one major roadblock that often stops us from doing it immediately: Years of dark permanent dye buildup.
If you have been covering your greys using permanent dark dyes (whether black, dark brown, or castano hues)—especially every 2–4 weeks—your hair shaft is heavily saturated with synthetic dark pigments.
These pigments act like layers of hard-to-remove paint embedded deep within the hair structure. If we try to bleach and highlight over this buildup right away, two things happen:
Unwanted Brassiness: The dark artificial pigment resists lifting cleanly. Instead of achieving a smooth, buttery blonde or cool mushroom brown, the hair gets stuck in a harsh, patchy orange or reddish undertone.
Severe Damage: Forcing the hair to lift through years of dark permanent dye requires harsh, high-volume developers, which can compromise your hair elasticity and leave it feeling dry and straw-like.
To protect the integrity of your hair and achieve a clean, high-end dimensional result, I recommend a progressive step-by-step approach:
Say goodbye to boxed dyes and permanent dark coverage immediately.
During the transition phase, we manage your regrowing roots using light semi or demi-permanent formulas. These deposit tone gently on the surface without penetrating and locking into the hair core.
⚠️ Crucial Note: We must use lighter, softer demi-permanent tones—NOT dark or heavy shades. The goal is to soften the line between your natural hair and grey regrowth.
💭 Mindset Check: In this stage, your greys won't be 100% blocked out; they will look sheer, like natural soft highlights. If you still feel uncomfortable without 100% solid grey coverage, a bleached highlight transformation may not be the right path for you just yet. The philosophy of highlights is about blending, not masking.
We give your hair time to grow. Over several months, as you come in for regular trims, we gradually remove the old hair that holds the heavy permanent dye.
Once the old dark buildup is mostly cleared and your hair is healthy, we can perform a gentle, low-developer foil placement to give you a clean, dimensional, and long-lasting Grey Blending result!
If you are currently covering your greys with dark permanent dye and want to move towards a low-maintenance, dimensional look, I’m here to guide you through the process safely.
